  1. Vata: Stands for the elements of air and space. It is responsible for movement, creativity and flexibility.

  2. Pitta: Symbolises fire and water. It regulates metabolism, digestion and body temperature.

  3. Kapha: Symbolises earth and water. Kapha is responsible for stability, strength and moisture in the body.



What happens if the doshas are imbalanced?


In Ayurveda, health means that the doshas are in balance. An imbalance can be caused by external influences such as stress, poor diet, irregular sleep patterns or environmental factors.


  • Vata imbalance: Can manifest as dryness (e.g. skin, hair), insomnia, anxiety or constipation.

  • Pitta imbalance: Often leads to overheating, irritability, inflammation or digestive problems.

  • Kapha imbalance: Can lead to sluggishness, weight gain, oily skin or blocked sinuses.


Each imbalance manifests differently depending on your personal constitution. The key is to recognise the causes and restore the balance with targeted measures such as yoga, diet or Ayurvedic routines.


The connection to skin


As the skin is considered a reflection of inner health, a dosha imbalance is often clearly visible on the skin:


Vata: Dry, cracked skin, fine wrinkles.

Pitta: Acne, inflammation, redness.

Kapha: Shiny, oily skin, clogged pores.
